Drought Related Pasture Decisions

Drought conditions can virtually stop pasture growth. There is little one can do to affect immediate forage production, but decisions concerning future management alternatives should be determined.

Plan now for winter pastures planted either on a prepared seedbed or sod-seeded on warm season pastures. Obtain soil tests to determine the most productive winter pasture, prepare seedbeds and order planting seed. Consult with your county Extension agent for best local varieties, seeding rates and planting dates.

With pastures grazed short because of drought, fall may be the most favorable time to try sod-seeded winter pastures or legumes. Soil testing is vital if pH could be a problem with legumes. Apply needed limestone for pH changes. Seed and seed inoculant should be ordered early. Check with your county Extension Agent for adapted varieties of legumes and/or small grains.
